1 Killed, 1 Injured In Crash On Florida’s Turnpike

CarCrash2

Driving is a task that requires a significant amount of skill and concentration. One wrong move can be dangerous and even fatal.

Sadly, this was recently the case in Orlando. A driver’s loss of control caused him to overcorrect and flip over the vehicle, causing his death. The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of December 9 on Florida’s Turnpike.

The 19-year-old driver and his passenger were riding in a Mazda MX-5. They were heading north on the turnpike. As they approached the Interstate 4 express lane onramp, the driver switched lanes and lost control of the Mazda. The vehicle hit a concrete wall barrier. The driver overcorrected to the right and collided with another barrier. The impact caused the Mazda to overturn onto its roof.

The driver died at the accident scene. The passenger was taken to Health Central Hospital. They were treated for non-life threatening injuries. No other vehicles were involved. The accident closed the northbound Turnpike lanes from Consulate Drive to Interstate 4 for about five hours.

Dangers of Overcorrecting

Overcorrecting can have unintended consequences in various contexts, often exacerbating the original problem or creating new challenges. Here’s a look at some of the dangers:

  • Loss of vehicle control. Overcorrecting usually involves a sudden and excessive turn of the steering wheel. This abrupt motion can cause the driver to lose control, leading to the vehicle swerving or skidding.
  • Increased risk of rollovers. Overcorrection is especially hazardous in vehicles with a higher center of gravity, such as SUVs or trucks. The sudden shift in weight can cause the vehicle to roll over.
  • Crossing into other lanes or traffic. A sharp overcorrection can cause the car to veer into oncoming traffic, putting the driver, passengers, and other road users at risk of head-on collisions.
  • Running off the road. Instead of regaining a safe position on the road, overcorrecting might result in the car leaving the roadway entirely, leading to collisions with trees, barriers, or other obstacles.

To avoid overcorrecting:

  • Stay calm. If you veer off the road, gently ease off the gas pedal and steer gradually back onto the road when it is safe.
  • Grip the steering wheel properly. Use both hands for better control and precision.
  • Avoid abrupt movements. Always steer smoothly and avoid jerking the wheel.
  • Slow down gradually. Sudden braking in tandem with overcorrecting can worsen the situation. Apply brakes gently.
  • Practice defensive driving. Maintain awareness of your surroundings and road conditions to reduce the likelihood of needing sudden maneuvers.
