1 Killed, 1 Injured In Dirt Bike Accident

Motorc5

Dirt bikes can be fun to ride, but they need to be ridden safely. These are off-road vehicles that should not be on public roads with much larger passenger vehicles.

Sadly, two teens were involved in a crash while riding their dirt bike in Osceola County. One was injured, while the other was killed. The fatal accident occurred on the evening of November 3.

The 16-year-old driver and 18-year-old passenger were riding a Honda dirt bike. They were heading north while in the southbound lane of Marigold Avenue. That was when a Chevrolet Traverse SUV was driving on the southbound lane on Marigold Avenue, almost leading to a head-on collision.

The driver of the dirt bike swerved to the left to avoid the SUV, but the bike collided with a metal pole on the shoulder of the road. The 16-year-old driver was ejected from the dirt bike. He landed in the path of the SUV. He was taken to a local hospital, where they later died. The passenger suffered serious injuries and was also taken to the hospital.

The occupants of the SUV were not injured and remained at the accident scene. The crash is still under investigation.

Causes of Dirt Bike Accidents

Dirt bike accidents can happen for several reasons. Common causes include:

  • Loss of control. Dirt bikes are designed for off-road and rugged terrain, which can be unpredictable. Slippery surfaces, rocks, or unexpected obstacles often cause riders to lose control.
  • High speeds and recklessness. Speeding and attempting dangerous stunts increase the likelihood of accidents. High-speed crashes can result in severe injuries or even fatalities.
  • New riders may not be familiar with handling the bike, understanding the terrain, or using safety techniques, which can lead to crashes.
  • Collision with objects. This is what happened in this case. The rider collided with a metal pole. Riders may also collide with trees, huge rocks, and other objects. The impact can lead to significant injuries.

Dirt bike accidents can lead to a variety of injuries, such as:

  • Head injuries. Concussions and traumatic brain injuries can occur if helmets aren’t worn.
  • Fractures and broken bones. These are common in arms, legs, ribs, and collarbones.
  • Sprains and dislocations. Ankle, wrist, and shoulder injuries can occur from falls.
  • Spinal injuries. Severe crashes can result in back injuries or paralysis.
  • Road rash. A rider can suffer scrapes and abrasions from sliding on gravel or dirt.
