1 Killed, 2 Injured In Clermont Crash

FallingTree

Car accidents can happen at any time. You could be driving down the road when a tree suddenly falls on your vehicle and kills you. This is the type of freak accident that recently killed a man in Florida.

A tree fell on a vehicle in Clermont, causing the vehicle to collide with a dump truck. The crash killed the driver. The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of August 20 at the intersection of County Road 474 and State Road 33.

Three people were inside a pickup truck a driver (a 58-year-old man), a front-seat passenger (40-year-old woman), and a rear-seat passenger (a 34-year-old man). All were from Groveland. They were heading west on County Road 474, east of the State Road 33 intersection, when a tree from the shoulder suddenly fell on the truck. The impact caused the pickup truck to enter the eastbound lane in the direct path of a dump truck. Both vehicles collided.

The driver and front seat passenger in the pickup truck suffered serious injuries and were both airlifted to HCA Florida Osceola Hospital. The driver later died at the hospital. The other passenger in the truck was seriously injured and taken to AdventHealth Four Corners ER for treatment.

The driver of the dump truck, a 47-year-old man from Kissimmee, was not injured. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

Car Accidents Caused by Falling Trees

Car accidents caused by falling trees are pretty rare but can be severe and even fatal when they occur. Here are some common reasons:

  • Weather conditions. Strong winds can uproot trees or break large branches, causing them to fall onto roads or directly onto vehicles. Excessive moisture can weaken the soil around a tree’s roots, leading to instability. Severe storms, including hurricanes and tornadoes, can also cause trees to fall.
  • Tree condition. Trees that are not healthy are more prone to falling. Disease, rot, or insect infestations can weaken the structure of a tree. Older trees or those that have not been pruned properly may become top-heavy or have dead branches, increasing the risk of falling.
  • Proximity to roads. Trees close to roads are more likely to cause accidents. This is a particular concern in areas with dense tree cover near highways or urban streets. In some cases, the trees near roadways may not be properly maintained, increasing the risk of falling.
