1 Killed In Dump Truck Crash

DumpTruck4

Dump trucks are heavy vehicles that can cause a lot of damage. A full dump truck can weigh 50,000 pounds or more, causing catastrophic injuries or death.

Sadly, this recently happened in Marion County. A dump truck lost control and crashed, killing the driver. The fatal accident occurred on the morning of August 13 on County Road 225A.

The crash happened on County Road 225A, south of NW 79 Avenue Road. The driver of the dump truck, a 44-year-old man from Dunnellon, was heading north on County Road 225A when the truck crossed over the center line for unknown reasons. The truck exited the roadway and ended up on the wet grass. It continued on, hitting a concrete barrier wall.

A witness called 911. The caller stated that the dump truck had gone off the road and hit a retaining wall. Firefighters from Marion County Fire Rescue worked to get the driver out of the dump truck, but he later died. The crash is under investigation.

What Causes Dump Trucks to Lose Control?

Dump trucks have a unique design, which can cause them to lose control and get into an accident. Here are some other common causes:

  • Driver error. Operating a dump truck requires specialized skills. Inexperienced drivers may struggle with handling, especially in difficult conditions. Driving too fast for the conditions or the truck’s load can cause the vehicle to become unstable. Also, long hours and monotonous driving can lead to loss of focus, increasing the risk of accidents.
  • Overloading or uneven loading. Exceeding the truck’s weight capacity can make it harder to control, especially during turns or sudden stops. If the load is not evenly distributed, it can cause the truck to tip or become unstable, particularly on uneven terrain or during cornering.
  • Tire issues. A tire blowout, especially at high speeds or under heavy loads, can lead to a loss of control. Incorrect tire pressure affects handling and can increase the risk of accidents.
  • Mechanical failures. Malfunctioning brakes can make it difficult to stop the truck in time, leading to loss of control. Issues with the steering system can prevent the driver from maintaining proper control, especially in tight spaces or on rough terrain.
  • High center of gravity. Dump trucks often have a high center of gravity, making them more prone to tipping over, particularly when turning sharply or when the load shifts suddenly.
  • Poor road conditions. Gravel, mud, ice, or other slippery surfaces can cause a dump truck to lose traction and control. Driving on steep inclines or declines can be challenging, especially if the load shifts or the brakes fail.
