Motorcyclist Recovering After West Melbourne Hit And Run Accident

RoadCPR

Motorcycle riders face a lot of risks out on the roadways. They can get hit by cars at any time and become seriously injured.

A motorcycle rider was recently hit by a car in West Melbourne. The driver did not stop, leaving the rider for dead. Fortunately, bystanders stepped in and called for help. Their actions saved the man’s life.

The accident happened on Labor Day weekend. Police arrested the driver, a 24-year-old woman, on September 4.

Police released a photo showing what appears to be the biker’s motorcycle lodged under the suspect’s car. The victim, a  34-year-old man, was taken to the intensive care unit at a local hospital. He has since been taken out of critical care and has another surgery set for September

The man is alive thanks to a good Samaritan. A DoorDash driver was making a late-night delivery on the morning of September 1 when he saw a man lying in the middle of the road at  U.S. 192 and Dairy Road. He had been hit by a car and the driver had fled the accident scene. It is unknown how the crash occurred.

The man immediately called 911 and told the 911 dispatcher that the motorcycle rider was dead. The good news is that the man was still alive and kicking. It was fortunate that the man was there and was able to help him. The man was about to start doing chest compressions when emergency services arrived.

The Good Samaritan is still trying to process what happened. The driver was arrested three days later.

When a Car Hits a Motorcycle

When a car hits a motorcycle, the consequences are often severe due to the significant size and weight difference between the two vehicles. Here are the common issues that arise in such accidents:

  • Severe injuries. Motorcyclists are highly vulnerable because they lack the protective shell that cars have. Even with safety gear, there is a high risk of severe injuries like broken bones, head trauma, and spinal cord damage.
  • Fatalities. Motorcycle accidents involving cars are more likely to result in fatalities, especially in high-speed crashes.
  • In many cases, a motorcyclist is ejected from the bike, leading to high-impact collisions with the ground or other objects.
  • If the rider is thrown onto the road, they may slide across the pavement, causing serious abrasions, known as road rash.

To prevent these accidents, motorists should always check blind spots and signal clearly, giving motorcyclists enough space. Wearing a helmet, using protective gear, and practicing defensive driving are crucial for motorcyclists to reduce injuries.
