Local Organization Hopes to Reduce Pedestrian Deaths and Injuries
It’s widely known that Central Florida is one of the fastest growing communities in the nation. With such rapid growth comes an increase in traffic accidents, injuries and deaths. Many of these unfortunate incidents are actually not car vs. car, but rather, car vs. pedestrian.
“Best Foot Forward,” an organization working to reduce pedestrian deaths and injuries has been working diligently to educate the public about Florida’s yield laws. Currently the laws say this:
#1. Drivers must yield to pedestrians at intersections even if there are no pavement markings or signs
#2. Drivers may not pass cars that are stopped at a crosswalk.
#3. Turning vehicles must stop for pedestrians at intersections with traffic signals.
#4. Drivers must come to a complete stop at crosswalks with signs indicsting that a full stop is required.
Florida Statutes: 316.123 states this clearly, and when drivers ignore these statutes they risk injuring or killing pedestrians, and they also risk being liable.
If you or a loved has been injured in some way related to the above Florida statutes, consulting with an experienced attorney can be extremely valuable in clarifying whether damages are appropriate and whether a wrongful death lawsuit is possible. Determining the amount of damages in these very sensitive situations should be left to an attorney that understands and has years of experience being as an advocate for the people in the community.
