Kissimmee Woman Killed In Pedestrian Accident
Being a pedestrian is not always a safe choice. Being around cars and trucks can put a person in danger. It can even be deadly if either the pedestrian or the driver makes a wrong decision.
Sadly, this was recently the case for a Kissimmee woman. The 22-year-old woman was hit and killed by a pickup truck. The fatal accident occurred on the evening of March 10 in Kissimmee.
A Ford F-150 driven by a 28-year-old Kissimmee man was heading south on Poinciana Boulevard. At the same time, the woman, who was in a crosswalk, walked in front of the pickup truck while attempting to cross the intersection of Poinciana Boulevard and Waterview Estates Boulevard.
A witness said the pickup had a green light and therefore the right of way. After hitting the woman, the driver kept driving. He later returned to the accident scene, saying that he did not know what he hit. It is unknown how long it took for the driver to return.
The woman died at the accident scene. The crash is still under investigation.
Accidents Caused by Pedestrians
Pedestrians have some rights in Florida. For example, a driver is required to yield the right of way to a pedestrian lawfully crossing in a crosswalk. Also, pedestrians may cross at most mid-block locations, but must yield outside a crosswalk.
However, contrary to popular belief, pedestrians do not always have the right of way. Sometimes they are at fault for accidents. Here are some examples:
- Crossing a road outside of designated crosswalks or against traffic signals can put pedestrians at fault if they cause an accident.
- Darting into traffic. Suddenly entering the roadway without giving drivers adequate time to react can result in accidents where the pedestrian is at fault.
- Failure to yield. Pedestrians are required to yield to vehicles when crossing outside of marked crosswalks or at intersections where there are no pedestrian signals. Failure to yield can result in accidents.
- Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs can impair judgment and coordination, leading pedestrians to make poor decisions and potentially cause accidents.
- Distracted walking. Being distracted by electronic devices, conversations, or other activities while crossing the road can lead to accidents for which the pedestrian is responsible.
- Walking on prohibited roadways. Pedestrians walking on highways, freeways, or other roadways where pedestrian access is restricted may be at fault for accidents.
