Car Accidents While Traveling

CarAccCamper

The holidays are upon us, which means many people are traveling to see relatives. Maybe you’re just driving down the road or to the next town over. Many people have much longer trips though. They may be traveling to a different part of the state or even going out of state. While some people fly, others load up the family and travel by car.

A road trip can be convenient, cheap, and even fun. However, with so many vehicles on the road, car accidents become more common. The period from Thanksgiving to Christmas can be deadly. Over the course of a five-year period, more than 32,000 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in the months of November and December.

If you’re out of town, getting into a car accident can really be a pain. You may not be prepared for one, but a crash can happen at any time. This can be frightening if you’re in an unfamiliar area.

Don’t worry too much. Here are some tips to reduce stress.

Have a Plan in Place

Before you go on your road trip, make sure you have a plan of action in place. If you get into an accident, you may not be able to return home in your vehicle. Make sure you understand your options. Does your insurance coverage offer car rental services? Also, get an idea of the local resources available to you. Are you heading to a rural area with little cell coverage and no public transportation? Or maybe you’re going to a large metropolitan area with  airports and train stations. Plan ahead.

Get the Help You Need

Don’t be too proud to ask for help if you need it. If you are in an unfamiliar area and get in an auto accident, you may need some assistance getting around town. You may be able to hire an Uber or Lyft. You could take public transportation in some cases. But in a rural area, these resources may not be available to you. In that case, call the police and see if they can help.

Have an Emergency Fund

Make sure you have extra money on hand in case an emergency arises and you need to pay for a plane, train, or bus ride home. You may also have to stay in town longer than expected, which means you may need money for a hotel stay. At the very least, have a credit card on hand to pay for necessary expenses.
