Child Killed In Crash On I-4

Those in a hurry may resort to passing vehicles on the roadway, but this practice can be unsafe. An improper pass can lead to a serious or fatal accident.
This was recently the case in Hillsborough County. A 1-year-old child was killed and two other people were injured after two SUVs collided. The fatal crash occurred in the early morning hours of November 29.
One child was killed and two were injured in a crash on Interstate 4 in Hillsborough County early Friday.
A Jeep Cherokee, driven by a 21-year-old woman from Englewood, was traveling east on Interstate 4 in Hillsborough County when it passed a Toyota RAV4 near mile marker 10 near County Road 579. The two vehicles collided.
Both vehicles came to a stop. There were three children inside the Toyota. A 6-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy, and a 1-year-old girl were all taken to a local hospital. The 1-year-old later died from her injuries. The two other children suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The driver of the Toyota, a 30-year-old woman from Dundee, was also injured and taken to a local hospital. There was also a 34-year-old Orlando woman inside the Toyota, but she was not injured. The woman driving the Jeep was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The accident is still under investigation.
Risks of Passing
Passing vehicles can pose several dangers. Here are some of the most common risks:
- Speed-related hazards. Vehicles traveling at high speeds have less time to react, and collisions are more likely to be severe. It’s important to be vigilant near roads, especially in high-speed zones.
- Blind spots. Drivers may not see other vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists in their blind spots while passing. Avoid lingering in blind spots. Use mirrors and shoulder checks before changing lanes or passing.
- Close passing. Vehicles passing too closely to cyclists or pedestrians can cause accidents or injuries from drafts or side-swiping. Drivers should allow at least 3 to 5 feet when passing cyclists or pedestrians.
- Misjudging distance and speed. Drivers may underestimate the speed of oncoming traffic when passing, leading to head-on collisions. Only pass when you have a clear, long stretch of road and sufficient time to return to your lane.
- Adverse weather conditions. Rain, fog, or snow can reduce visibility and traction, increasing the risk during passing maneuvers. Drive cautiously and avoid passing unless absolutely necessary in poor weather.
- Poor road design or maintenance. Narrow roads, sharp turns, or potholes can make passing more dangerous. Avoid passing in areas with poor visibility or road conditions.
