Kissimmee Woman Killed While Walking In Crosswalk

SeniorPedestrian

Some people jaywalk, running in front of speeding cars at places other than intersections. Then there are those who use marked crosswalks and still get hit by a car, so it doesn’t really matter. A pedestrian accident can happen at any time and it can be serious or even fatal.

Sadly, a woman was killed in a pedestrian accident in Poinciana. The fatal crash occurred on the morning of April 1 at San Lorenzo Road and Koa Street.

The 63-year-old Kissimmee woman was crossing the intersection in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by a Honda Civic. The woman died from her injuries. The driver, a 51-year-old Kissimmee man, remained at the accident scene.

The accident is still under investigation. According to Florida Highway Patrol troopers, a witness said that the crosswalk is in a dimly lit area.

Causes of Pedestrian Accidents

A pedestrian accident may be caused by a driver or the pedestrian. Here are some common causes:

  • Distracted driving. When a driver is not focused on the road, they may not see pedestrians. Drivers should refrain from texting, reading, and talking to passengers while driving.
  • Failing to yield right of way. Pedestrians do not always have the right of way, but they may think they do. If pedestrians do not yield to drivers and drivers do not yield to pedestrians, accidents can happen.
  • Crossing a roadway or intersection improperly. Pedestrians should cross at intersections and crosswalks, not in the middle of the road where drivers cannot see them.
  • Standing, lying, or playing in a roadway. Pedestrians need to stay out of the road when they are not crossing it. They can get hit by a car if they are standing or lying down in the middle of the road. Children should avoid playing in the streets.
  • Poor visibility. This was the issue in this case. The driver could not see the pedestrian due to a lack of lighting. In the late night and early morning hours, it is dark, making it harder to see.
  • Being under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication can cause a person to act erratically. They may lack judgment and coordination. It may be harder for them to drive. Vision is also affected, making it harder to see pedestrians.
  • Being on prohibited roads. Pedestrians need to be aware of where they can legally walk. For example, they cannot be on freeways due to high speeds and a lack of crossing areas.
