Motorcycle Rider Killed In Poinciana Crash

MotorcycleAccident10

Drivers need to be careful when making a turn. Turning involves starting from one road and ending up in another. When making a turn, you need to be aware of what all may be involved, including obstacles in the road like motorcycles and other vehicles.

A left turn resulted in tragedy for a motorcycle rider. The fatal accident occurred just after midnight on December 3 in Poinciana.

An SUV was traveling north along Marigold Avenue while a motorcycle was heading south.  Both were approaching San Miguel Road when the SUV attempted to make a left turn. That was when it entered the path of the motorcycle, causing a crash.

The impact caused both vehicles to become engulfed in flames. The motorcyclist — a 29-year-old man from Kissimmee — died at the accident scene. The driver and two passengers of the SUV suffered minor injuries. They were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. The crash is under investigation.

Left-Turn Accidents

Left turns may seem easy enough, especially if you are a seasoned driver. However, left turns can be dangerous because the driver must divert their attention to multiple hazards, such as traffic lights, other vehicles, and blind spots. Making a left turn can be even harder in certain circumstances, such as night driving and poor weather.

If you are crossing an unfamiliar intersection for the first time, you may be unaware of the special rules that apply. For example, traffic in the other direction may have the right of way and you may only be able to make a left turn after yielding to all traffic. These unfamiliar intersections may create a hazard, which is why roads we travel on regularly are often safer.

Because of all these factors, left turns often end up in crashes. This is especially true when a vehicle is making a left-hand turn and collides with a vehicle that is headed straight, generally in the opposite direction.

Drivers intending to make a left turn are required to yield the right of way to vehicles approaching in the opposite direction. They must wait until it is safe to make their turn.

As a result, when left-turn crashes occur, the driver making the left-hand turn is almost always found liable. However, there are some exceptions. Left-turning drivers may not be 100% liable in the following scenarios:

  • The driver heading straight was speeding.
  • The driver heading straight failed to stop at a red light or stop sign.
  • The driver going straight was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, causing them to contribute to the accident.
  • The driver going straight was distracted, which led to the crash.
