SUV Collides With Home In Osceola Crash

Accident_Wall2

A hit and run crash in Osceola has led to a damaged home and a woman in handcuffs. The accident occurred on the afternoon of October 17 in Neptune Road near Kings Highway.

A Ford Explorer crashed into a house, damaging the home’s brick exterior. The SUV, driven by a 28-year-old woman, ended up partially inside the house.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers watched the homeowner’s surveillance footage and determined that all five occupants of the vehicle fled the accident scene on foot. The footage showed the faces of all five occupants, which aided with the investigation. A trooper arrived outside the damaged home to find the vehicle abandoned there. It had significant front-end damage.

The driver was later located near the accident scene. She was detained by the authorities. While being interviewed, she denied ever having been inside the vehicle. Troopers noted that she had a swollen eye, which she likely sustained from the deployment of the driver’s side airbag. She refused to discuss crash documents and was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash, causing property damage, and driving with a suspended license. She was booked into the Osceola County Jail, with bond set at $1,000.

Why Do Vehicles Collide With Homes?

Cars do not collide with homes on a regular basis, although it happens more and more often. Here are some reasons why:

  • Driver error. Loss of control is a common cause. Alcohol or drugs can impair a driver’s ability to control the vehicle. Drowsy drivers can fall asleep at the wheel, causing them to veer off the road. Distracted driving is also a major concern. Using a phone, adjusting the radio, or other distractions can make the driver unaware of their surroundings. Pedal confusion is becoming more and more common, with drivers mistaking the gas pedal for the brake. This can cause the car to accelerate unexpectedly and hit a building or other object.
  • Speeding and reckless driving. High-speed crashes often lead to crashes, as excessive speed makes it harder to control the vehicle on sharp curves or stop in time. In some cases, illegal street racing is the cause.
  • Environmental factors. Weather conditions such as ice, snow, or wet roads can cause skidding, sending cars off the road. Also, some houses are located close to sharp bends or intersections, where cars are more likely to lose control.
  • Mechanical failures. Malfunctioning brakes can prevent a driver from stopping. Steering problems can also cause a car to go off course. A blown tire can also make the vehicle uncontrollable.
  • Intentional incidents. Road rage and deliberate acts are rare, but they do involve drivers intentionally colliding with homes. Medical emergencies could also be to blame. A driver experiencing a heart attack or seizure may lose control.
