Woman Killed In Kissimmee Pedestrian Accident

Accident_Victim

As a pedestrian, you may be able to get to places that cars cannot. Or you may try to cross busy highways while traveling at high speeds. Unfortunately, this is often a recipe for disaster, especially when there are visibility issues involved.

A pedestrian was recently killed in a crash after she was hit by a car in Kissimmee. The fatal crash occurred on the morning of November 11 on U.S. 192, also known as the Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway.

A 40-year-old woman from Colorado was walking in a northbound direction when she entered the westbound lanes of the Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway at Simpson Road. She was not in a marked crosswalk when she attempted to cross the road and was hit by a Honda Civic that was driven by a 20-year-old woman from Kissimmee.

The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital, where she later died. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. Photos taken at the accident scene show thick fog in the area.

Dangers of Fog in Car Accidents

Fog occurs when very fine moisture droplets are suspended in the air.  When light hits these droplets, it scatters and causes a dense white background.  As these droplets get smaller, fog gets thicker.

Thick fog causes many car accidents every year. That’s because it causes visibility issues, making it harder to see vehicles and other hazards on the roadway. Fog makes it so hard to see fog ahead that even airplanes will not depart airports if they are fogged in.

Given this information, you should avoid driving if there is heavy fog. Here are some ways in which fog impacts driving:

  • It distorts your perception of speed. Fog can make you think that an object is traveling slower than it really is. This applies to your own speed as well. If you drive in the fog, avoid speeding. Even when there are posted speed limits, you should go even slower to stay safe.
  • You will have a hard time distinguishing between a stationary object and a moving one. You may have difficulty determining between parked cars and driving cars, which can result in an accident if you are not careful.
  • You may misjudge distance. With fog reducing contrast and clouding your view, you are more likely to misjudge just how far away another car object is, making car accidents more likely.
  • High beams can make matters worse. If you drive at night in the fog, you might think to use your high beams. This is a bad idea. Instead of increasing visibility, using your brights will scatter more light back at you. This will make conditions even worse.
